The Celtic Arts Foundation is very pleased to announce a Beginners Workshop on Tin Whistles, starting up this spring at the Littlefield Celtic Center in Mount Vernon!  Tin whistles are mainstays of Celtic music groups, and our instructor, Becky Deryckx, is very active in the regional Irish Session music scene.  Becky regularly travels to Ireland to pursue her musical passion, and also helps recruit and present Irish musicians here at the Littlefield Celtic Center.  Class size is strictly limited to 15 and will fill quickly, so interested folks are encouraged to sign up right away.

This course is designed for beginners and will consist of four, two-hour evening classes, held every other week over an eight-week period: March 8 and 22, and April 5 and 19, from 7:00-9:00pm.  Registration requires non-refundable payment in advance for all four sessions at a total cost of $80 ($20 per two-hour session).  Please complete the registration form below to sign up.

Students do NOT need to read music, but a sense of rhythm and tone will be necessary. All tunes will be taught by ear, so the use of recording devices is strongly encouraged. Emphasis will be on having fun, and on helping students gain a general understanding of the instrument and its place in traditional music. In the process we will:

  • Learn one or more tunes each session
  • Work on intonation and breath control
  • Find out about basic ornamentation techniques and
  • Obtain an awareness of our responsibility as musicians

Participants are required to purchase a D Whistle to bring with them to all sessions.  Students may acquire a good quality Oak or Clarke metal D Whistle (Generation whistles are OK too) in the $10 to $15 range from local music stores or online.  Plastic (PVC) whistles are discouraged.  Low whistles are also not recommended for beginners, so please, for the purposes of the workshop, standard D Tin Whistles only.

This is the first of what we hope will be an ongoing series of instructional musical workshops, as we intend offering fiddle and bagpiping options in the not too distant future as well.  Finally, for inspiration, here’s one of the best (Mary Bergin) playing a set of whistle tunes:
