Highland Dancing competitions will take place at the Skagit Valley Highland Games only on Saturday, July 13th beginning at 9am.
Highland dance is a competitive and technical dance form that requires stamina, precision and grace to perform. Dancers compete in classes that are determined by their age and their success in previous competitions. Each dancer is judged individually, but performs simultaneously with other dancers from their competition group.
Dances are made up of four to six different "steps" which are a series of movements that are learned, memorized, and practiced for months ahead of a competition.
Some iconic dances you might see include the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, and the Strathspey. Most dances are performed in the traditional kilt, but some dances such as the Irish Jig, Sailor's Hornpipe, and Scottish National dances require different costumes.
This year the Highland Dancing competition will be held indoors.
Where is the Highland Dancing Pavilion? Just inside the North Gate, see map below.
