Scholarships for Winter School

The Celtic Arts Foundation is pleased to offer a limited number of piping, drumming and fiddling scholarships for Winter School 2018. Scholarships are for “instruction only”; lodging and meals are not included, unless specifically indicated. A limited number of full tuition scholarships are now available, in addition to a few partial tuition scholarships.

Please take special note of the following clarifications:

  • CAF scholarships will not be awarded to the same student, for the same instrument in consecutive years
  • Unless otherwise indicated, scholarship awards from CAF and other organizations apply to instruction only, and may not be applied to portions of meals and/or lodging costs (i.e., scholarship recipients receiving a 5-day instruction scholarship, may not attend a weekend workshop and apply “remaining” tuition award to weekend charges for lodging and meals).
  • Scholarships may not be transferred – they may only be used by student to whom CAF awarded it, and must be used for the current Winter School. Unused scholarships are forfeited.

Follow the link below to complete a scholarship application. Applications must be completed by the applicant (not a parent, guardian, or teacher), signed, dated and mailed. Please note: To be considered for the 2018 Winter School, the committee must receive a completed application by November 1, 2017. Recipients for Winter School 2018 will be notified by mail or email after November 15, 2017.

Thanks for your interest, and best of luck!

Here is the Celtic Arts Winter School Scholarship Form – 2018 to complete on your computer, print out and e-mail back to us (note, be sure to include any additional pages with your form).  Here is the same Winter School Scholarship Form – 2018 – Manual fill-in.  If for whatever reason you prefer completing the form manually, please complete and mail to us, or scan and e-mail works as well.

The Winter School prides itself on the variety of demographic groups represented at each session. In 2008, a new scholarship fund was created in memory of Mr. Jay Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a Spokane, WA native and keen adult-learner of the Great Highland Bagpipe. In 2012, our same anonymous donors once again made scholarship funding available for the 2013 Winter School, and are continuing a permanent scholarship fund with the gift of another $1000. The Celtic Arts Foundation will raise funds and solicit contributions to grow the Jay Johnson Scholarship Fund to a $20,000 endowed level, which will generate one full-tuition, room and board scholarship each year in perpetuity.

In 2013 a new Winter School Piping Scholarship was created in honor of the late Jeremiah MacKay, a piper and Sheriff  Deputy in California who was tragically killed in the line of duty.

Fiddle Scholarships

Two full scholarships are also available for fiddling: the Jerry Holland Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late, great Cape Breton fiddling master, and a new scholarship for 2017 for fiddling, sponsored by anonymous donors.  The Jerry Holland scholarship is based entirely on merit and is annually awarded to outstanding fiddlers to attend the 5-day Winter School fiddle program.  The new Winter School Fiddle Scholarship is a need-based scholarship, focused on helping students who may not otherwise be able to attend because of financial circumstances.
